Student Seats: Tips for University of Alabama Freshman
Moving to Tuscaloosa to attend the University of Alabama this August? We have the tips just for you to get the lay of the land so you aren't completely lost on the first week!
Getting to Know Tuscaloosa
In the grand scheme of things, Tuscaloosa isn't a very large city. In fact, most of the places you'll go are a very short car ride away. Speaking of cars, you need one or you need to know someone with one. Tuscaloosa is not a walkable city outside the campus area. The Strip (University Boulevard) runs along the southern edge of campus and is the main hub for food, bars, and shops. You will come to know the Strip very, very well. Then, downtown Tuscaloosa is about a mile west and has a growing food and entertainment scene along Greensboro Avenue.
The city is laid out in a grid for the most part. University Boulevard, McFarland Boulevard, and 15th Street are your main east-west arteries. Hackberry Lane and Jack Warner Parkway run north-south near campus. Learn these roads first and you'll never feel lost.
The primary hospital in Tuscaloosa is DCH and is located near the east end of campus.
Campus Layout
Alabama's campus is large but walkable once you learn the zones. The academic core (libraries, lecture halls, science buildings) sits in the center. The Student Center (previously known as The Ferg) is the student union and a natural meeting point. The Quad is the iconic green space with its old oak trees — this is where you'll see tailgating on gamedays and students studying on nice days.
Bryant-Denny Stadium dominates the southeast corner. The main Student Recreation Center is on the east end of campus near the Student Health Center (SHC).
Where to Eat on and Near Campus
On Campus:
Lakeside Dining — all-you-can-eat buffet, solid variety
Fresh Food — another dining hall option
The Student Center — Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, Starbucks, and more
Secret Restaurant Locations:
Chick Fil A in Lloyd Hall (east side of the quad)
Subway in Bidgood Hall (west side of the quad)
Raising Cane's in Paty Hall (just north of the Student Center)
The Strip (University Blvd):
Buffalo Phil's (B Phils) — burgers, wings (although very small), buffalo chicken dip, and a great atmosphere
Chipotle — it's Chipotle
Quick Grill — a tiny brick shed that stays open into the late, late hours of the night
Glorybound — a solid choice for gyros
Rama Jama's — a classic Tuscaloosa restaurant with smacking breakfast located next to the stadium
Downtown / Off Campus:
Avenue Pub — good wings and bar food
Chuck's Fish — upscale seafood, great for parents' weekend
Ajian — sushi and Asian fusion
Mr. Chen's — the go-to Chinese spot for students
Cookout — the late-night fast food staple (trays are unbeatable value)

Gameday Survival Guide
Alabama gamedays are unlike anything you've experienced. Here's what to expect:
Timing: Get to campus early. Streets close hours before kickoff and traffic becomes a nightmare. If you're walking from your dorm, leave at least 90 minutes before a big game for a noon kick.
Weather: The weather and humidity in Tuscaloosa are unlike anything you've experienced before. Just make sure to drink plenty of water on gameday to avoid heat related incidents. It happens every year, don't let it happen to you.
The Quad: This is tailgate central. Even if you don't have your own setup, walk through and you'll find food, cornhole, and people handing out free stuff. It's the heart of the gameday experience. It's also one block away from the stadium. The west side of the quad is usually where most student tailgates are and the right side of the quad is more for reserved tailgates through Gamedays Done Right.
What to Wear: Fashion tips are anyone's preference, but you should definitely wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking and standing a lot.
After the Game: The Strip and downtown bars fill up fast after a win. Gallettes, Innisfree, and Rounders are popular student spots.
Other Tips
Get a bike or scooter. Campus is spread out, and the Crimson Ride buses get packed between classes.
Explore the Riverwalk. It's a great running/walking trail along the Black Warrior River, accessible from campus.
Get on Board Day. This is the semi-annual club day. It takes place on the Quad and will be held on August 27th, 2026.
The Crimson White. This is the student news body. They always have helpful articles and keep up with the know around campus.
